Craft Book of the Month - First Draft in 30 Days

First Draft in 30 Days: a novel writer's system for building a complete and cohesive manuscript by Karen S. Wiesner is an oldie (Writer's Digest Books, 2005) but a goodie.

I like to reread this book right before November's NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. The original challenge of NaNo was to write a complete first draft of a new work, 50,000 words, in 30 days. The challenge is more relaxed now, making room for folks who want to use their 50,000 words to finish a work in progress or to write nonfiction. This book is perfect for either writing a first draft or working to finish a work in progress.

Wiesner introduces the writer to an outlining process that if followed gives you a complete draft. She offers an alternative 30 day outline for a work in progress or a stalled project. Each strategy has accompanying worksheets.

Either way, I have found Wiesner's book to be the perfect Nano warm up as well as a perfect read when you have a novel hatching and need a midwife to assist in delivery. Enjoy!
