Show Your Work!

Austin Kleon is the author of Steal Like An Artist where he gave ten principles for unlocking your inner artist. His new book, Show Your Work! 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered is very similar in format and style to his first book and that is a good thing! I’ll share my two favorite ways and encourage you to pick up the book for the rest.

#2 Think process, not product

Find ways to share your work while it is in process. Use social media to post video, audio, pinboards, plans, notes, inspiration, or demos. In addition to forming a relationship with your customers or clients, by documenting your work you gain perspective and witness your progress

#6 Teach what you know

When you learn something, immediately teach it to others. When you teach someone how to do what you do that does not threaten your work, it expands it. Learning is generative.

Like the first book, Show Your Work! has art that enhances and expands the writing. Kleon has a redacted poetry collection, Newspaper Blackout and he uses that technique very effectively here. Chalkboard-like illustrations and black and white photography complete the black and white experience.

So, be brave. Be generous. And show your work!
